Data were collected in the Auau Channel, Main Hawaiian Islands, to support benthic habitat mapping efforts during the HURL Ship R/V Ka'imikai-o-Kanaloa cruise in February 2009. Purpose: These data provide optical observations that will be used to provide information on the location and distribution of mesophotic coral ecosystem communities between approximately 40 and 150 m depths. Refer to supplemental information for description of instrument and survey. Supplemental_Information: The waters of the Auau Channel, located between and protected by the islands of Maui, Lanai, Molokai, and Kahoolawe to the east, west, north, and south respectively, is bounded by the latitudes 20.983 and 20.733 and the longitudes -156.633 and -156.858. Topography of the channel consists of solution basins and rims (ridges), sediment plains and reef pinnacles on the channel floor, which were subaerially exposed during late Quaternary lowstands of sea level. Holocene reef growth occurs as a thin veneer on topographic highs in the Channel. The Channel reaches depths of 140 m, however, the majority of the seafloor is between 55 m and 100 m deep. The Auau Channel has been documented to include abundant coral reefs at these depths, which along with algae and other organsims found there, collectively form mesophotic coral ecosystems. Optical validation data were collected using HURL's RCV-150 remotely operated vehicle (ROV), deployed during nighttime hours usually between 1900 and 2300 (Hawaii time). Equipment description: The RCV-150 system consists of a remotely operated vehicle with a color analog video camera, two parallel lasers for scale, and six 250 W lamps. This was deployed from the HURL ship, R/V Ka'imikai-o-Kanaloa. A heavy cage was deployed off the ship's J-frame to whic the ROV was tethered, using a dedicated winch. The ROV operators maintain the ROV, or at least the glow from its lights, within sight of a downward-looking video camera on the cage. This keeps the horizontal distance between the ROV and the cage within 15 m for most deployments. Lighting mounted on the base of the cage provided additional illumination to the ROV. There are three primary sources of this error. The ship's positioning is based on non-differential GPS positioning, which has an accuracy of under 5 meters. The second and and larger source of error is the uncertainty associated with the ROV's position relative to the ship's antenna. This includes the offset of the cage from which the ROV is deployed, relative to the ship's antenna (approximately 10 m) and the distance the ROV may be from the cage (usually < 15 m). The third and largest source of error is from interpolating the position of the ROV in between waypoints. Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: Following the cruise, the waypoints providing the ship’s position that were recorded during the tow were entered into an Excel spreadsheet and imported into ArcGIS v 9.3. Waypoints provided positions for the ship approximately every 2–10 minutes. To obtain the approximate position of the ship between these points, an Excel macro was run which interpolated the track between these positions, assuming a constant speed of travel, providing approximate position for the ship at 30-second intervals. These positions were then re- imported into ArcGIS v 9.3 to display the interpolated track of the ship, and saved as shapefiles. These positions are used as the best indication of the position of the ROV during the tow, bearing in mind the limitations of the horizontal positional accuracy described above. Spreadsheets containing location and time data were then used to classify benthic habitat for each tow using the Pacific Coral Reef Ecosystem Benthic Habitat Mapping classification scheme. Five points were classified at 30 second intervals and codes were inputted into the spreadsheet. The spreadsheet was saved as dbase file, imported into ArcGIS v9.3, and saved as a shapefile. Percent cover of scleractinian coral was displayed in Optical Validation maps with classifications of other types of living cover and substrates contained within the attribute table of the shapefile.
