Joint Archive for Shipboard ADCP - How to Obtain Data

The shipboard ADCP data are available as two data types:

For each cruise, a metadata file is prepared for summarizing specifics about the instrumentation, cruise activities, processing, and calibration.

The ASCII standard subset, cruise tracks, metadata cruise summaries, and various plots and lists of cruises as a function of project or region can be found through our Online Inventory and Data Retrieval system. If one would like large batches of cruises and does not want to download them one at a time through the WWW, then please send email to Mr. Patrick Caldwell (caldwell@soest.hawaii.edu) and explain what sets you desire.

The densely_sampled set is available as binary CODAS block files. CODAS software is compatible to most workstations and IBM-PC compatible computers. The CODAS data extraction subset software and manual are available online. This is all a user needs to access a CODAS data set. In addition, the complete CODAS software and manual , which is geared to data collectors and processors, includes steps on how to load ping files (data from DAS), process, edit, calibrate, apply navigation data, and various other tasks. Many of these routines require Matlab, which must be obtained separately. Both CODAS software sets are available via anonymous ftp or paper mail and include a utility for translation of the block files between machines with different binary numbering conventions. A complete ASCII dump of the CODAS block files (about 50 Mbytes per cruise-month) can also be provided. Downloading the CODAS Extraction or the Complete Manual and Software is easy. If you have any questions, please let us know.

Both data types, metadata files, inventories, and cruise tracks can be obtained via conventional storage media (diskettes or DAT, eXabyte, or magnetic tapes) for a fee. The densely-sampled data set may also be made available on anonymous ftp on a case by case basis. In general, NODC products and services are provided on a cost recovery basis. Researchers who submit data to the NODC, however, are eligible to receive NODC data on exchange.

All orders from non-Federal customers must be prepaid, unless the customer meets strict criteria for a waiver of this requirement. Turn around time is about two to three weeks. Prepayment may be made by:

Purchase orders can be accepted from non-Federal customers only with prior approval from the NODC. If this authorization is not obtained beforehand, an additional charge of $24 will be added to the total charges for that order.

NODC user charges as of FY 1995 are:
