Hawaii Buoys and Wave Rider Gauges
Since the beginning of the 1980's, the
NOAA National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) has maintained an
array of environmental buoys in Hawaiian waters. These
instruments record a variety of parameters, such as air and
sea temperature, wind speed and direction, air pressure,
and wave period, height, and spectra. Other agencies, such as the
Coastal Data Information Program (CDIP) of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography
at the University of California at San Diego and the
U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers (USACE) have also collected
information on wave characteristics around Hawaii.
