Instructions: METADATA FORM FOR SHIPBOARD ADCP Three forms are given to the data producer: a blank form, an example, and this instruction file. Please fill in the blank form. If you encounter an uncertain entry, please refer to the example and instruction files. If an item is still uncertain or if the information is not available, leave the entry blank. It would be of greatest assistance to us if you could fill out the readily available entries and return the form at your earliest convenience, rather than getting bogged down on a few uncertain items. Please also review the items in the file prc_chk.lis which is a check list of editing steps and configuration options that the user may have applied to the data set. This information is used for creating a data processing mask for automatic documentation of how the data were processed. Once completed, please return the metadata form via email, a diskette (IBM-PC compatible preferred), or handwritten to Mr. Patrick Caldwell NODC Hawaii Liaison Officer Dept. of Oceanography University of Hawaii, MSB 317 Honolulu, Hawaii 96822 USA Internet: caldwell@kapau.soest.hawaii.edu fax: 808-956-2352 or 808-956-4104 office phone: 808-956-4105 Below, please find a repeat of the meta data form and notes on various keyword entries that require additional explanation. For the entries below, the first group are primary keywords and are prefixed with the pound sign (#). These should be given priority. These keywords are used with the inventory and data retrieval system and are necessary components of the archive system. The keywords under #GENERAL_INFORMATION: are secondary keywords. For these, please provide as much readily available information as possible. If an entry is uncertain, please leave it blank. ------------------------------------------------------------------ #DATA_DATES: yyyy/mm/dd hh/mm/ss to yyyy/mm/dd hh/mm/ss #LAT_RANGE: [+/-] dd mm.tt to [+/-] dd mm.tt #LON_RANGE: [+/-] ddd mm.tt to [+/-] ddd mm.tt #DEPTH_RANGE: dd to dddd m the above can be completed automatically at a later date when the data are loaded into the CODAS database #PLATFORM_NAME: #PRINCIPAL_INVESTIGATOR_NAME: refers to the one(s) responsible for the data. #PI_INSTITUTION: #PI_COUNTRY: #PROJECT: #CRUISE_NAME: #PORTS: #GEOGRAPHIC_REGION: #PROCESSED_BY: #NAVIGATION: #QUALITY_NAV: This is for a quick glance at the caliber of the data set; it is not easy to generalize but since the categories are so broad, most will be described as while only exceptionally good data sets will be and exceptionally bad data sets given . Lastly if not available, . This information would define the application for the ADCP data as shear only (poor or no navigation) or absolute currents (fair, good, or excellent navigation). #GENERAL_INFORMATION: This is all other pertinent information regarding instrumentation, processing, calibration, etc. Please do not let the length of this form hinder your efforts to provide metadata; please provide the information at hand and leave the unknown entries blank.
