Instructions for the Obtaining and Unpacking the CODAS Extraction, Analysis, and Graphical Software The National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) routinely archives and distributes shipboard acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) data. The data are available in high-density form as CODAS (Common Oceanographic Data Access System) binary files at the sampling frequency with which the data were recorded and processed, and in a standard subset form as flat ASCII files at hourly and 10m depth intervals. This software package is geared for data extraction and analysis of the CODAS binary files of high-resolution shipboard ADCP data. It is a subset of the total CODAS package, which includes processing, calibration, and navigation utilities. The software requires under 2 Mbytes of disk space for loading. Presently, CODAS software is available for IBM PCs using DOS and SUN and SGI workstations. SOFTWARE ================================================================= The CODAS source code, libraries, and executables have been archived as codxtrct.exe (PC self-extracting zipfile, ~600K unpacks to ~2MB) codxtrct.sgi.Z (SGI compressed tarfile, ~1MB unpacks to ~1.5MB) codxtrct.sun4.Z (Sun4 compressed tarfile, ~800K unpacks to ~2MB) The software is available via anonymous FTP. Enter ftp noio.soest.hawaii.edu (or ftp 128.171.154.140) user: anonymous password: your email address, ie, caldwell@soest.hawaii.edu Then change directories to the subdirectory pub/codas3. (cd pub/codas3) The files should be transferred in binary mode. (IE. type 'binary', then type 'get filename' for the desired file as function of your machine (PC, SUN, SGI)). To dearchive the Sun or SGI versions: % zcat codxtrct.xxx.Z | tar xvf - where xxx = sun4 or sgi This will create a codxtrct subdirectory in the current directory. To dearchive the PC version: C> codxtrct -d It also creates a codxtrct subdirectory in the current directory. Be sure to modify your search path to find the executables: ./codxtrct/bin/sun4 (for the Sun) ./codxtrct/bin/sgi (for the SGI) .\codxtrct\bin\pc (for the PC) Note that an essential part of the ADCP Processing System requires the commercial program Matlab (by The Math Works, Inc.), which the user must acquire separately. However, for this subset of the complete CODAS package, only a few of the graphical routines require Matlab. The contour plotting program is also available by anonymous ftp from this site (contour.tar.Z) but only for the Sun workstation at the present time. The following information is described in the manual, but is repeated here for those who hate manuals. INITIAL SETUP ------------- Once the software has been loaded and the path to the executables has been set, one may set up a working area by entering maketree [ path-name\ ]cruise-name [ CODAS path ] This is a batch file for setting up a subdirectory system for an new ADCP database and automatically copying the required control and .M files to the appropriate subdirectories. The command line argument must specify the pathname (optional), and cruise name (e.g., MW8901) as a single string; the cruise name should have no more than 8 characters. If the CODAS subdirectory is not under the root directory of the current drive, its path must also be given on the command line. For example, on a PC, assume one loaded the CODAS into a subdirectory adcp_lib, and set the path to include c:\adcp_lib\codxtrct\bin\pc.
